The Americans who filled out our ancestors court records etc....and it even happens when we go back to the old country and try to figure out the handwritings of our ancestors I am so told......that misspellings happen....I know on some of my grandfathers legal things his Hiebert was Huebert and believe me he knew how to spell his name, very wise educated man....but court officials did not ....he had a clear handwriting too...beautiful script for a man, even in his eighties it was clear. But as I said their are documents that way.....some of his siblings in the papers from Russia are Hiebert and others Huebert......his is the Huebert......my Nusz/Nuss side....which is the correct spelling....my Grandparents spelled it Nusz.....but on some of the legal documents...as his citizenship papers it is Nuss........so it it might be possible he did not spell his name......now my husbands birthcertificate is not Cantrell....and none of his siblings have a single birthcertificate spelled the same way...due to the fact their mother could not spell nor her sisters/brothers.....so even though the family name is Cantrell his birthcertificate thus SS# info military records etc are Cantrill.....his brothers are Cantriell....
Maybe it was the hospital employee who filled out the paper work for my in-laws....funny quirks in the searching of paper work......
