I was fortunate enough to know Earl for many years, and thoroughly admired his knowledge of the Higginbotham Family, and his assistance through the years pursuing my research. Although we were sixth or seventh cousins many times removed he felt more like an uncle. We finally met in person at a small re-union of family in Amherst, Virginia, and revisited several places of interest to the family and were involved ( unsucessfully) in finding the original mill-stone that belonged to Moses Higginbotham c 1750. An old leather bound book printed in 1792 about horse medicine was donated to the Amherst Historical Society. This book contained the autograph of George Washington Higginbotham Sr.and his son. Earl had spent considerable time working with me in trying to identify members of our family who served in the Civil War, and a whole lot of Higginbotham history. We spent countless hours talking , laughing and sharing stories. He will be dearly missed. Another death that occurred this past year was Don Higginbotham, who was a well renowned writer of American History, and was a professor at North Carolina University. Both Earl and Don were friends, loved history and the pursuit of documenting it through research. They have passed the torch to the next generation of researchers.
