Thank you so much Jeanine. It is really great that someone has finally broken through and found an ancestry for Jeremiah Highfield. This has been a brick wall for lots of people.I look forward to anything more that you can tell us that will verify your conclusions.
Surprisingly, I find that I can help you a little.I am also a Burch descendent and have most of the published books about the various Birch/Burch/Burtch lines.
Ralph D. Smith of Port Orange, FL has researched the Burch families that lived in Maryland and printed two volumes titled "The Burch Families of Southern Maryland to 1800".
This family began with Oliver Burch (1647 - 1729) who came from Penrith cumberland County, England.By 1680 he was in the portion of St Mary's Co., Md. that was transferred to Charles Co. Md. in 1695.He married Barbara Tennison who was the dau. of Justinian Tennison and Katherine Gresham.
Their second son was Thomas Burch who you are concerned about. He was b. ca. 1685 in St. Mary's Co. which was later Charles Co.He was a carpenter and planter. He passed away October 1765 in Charles Co. Md.His wife's name is not known. His children were named; Thomas Jr., Susannah, Mary and Elisabeth.
The second volume of Ralph Smith's histories has a "Highfield mention".Page 3 has the following section:
"Dec. 1, 1710 - Oliver Burch and Robert Mahone are sureties in the amount of 30 pounds sterling on the administration bond of Thomas Burch, administrator of the estate of Richard Highfield, late of Charles Co., deceased.
Source:Maryland Prerogative Court, Testamentary Proceedings, Liber 21, p. 307."
You may have already seen this.I think it means that they were living near each other and good friends.Smith's book lists all the children of the members of the Burch family and this is the only mention of the Highfield name. However, if you have other names from your research, then I can check them to see if they appear anyplace in Smith's books. The surname Mitchell appears a few times with minor comments.
