I am a descendant of Cherokee/Creek Freedmen. The Cherokee was my ggrandmother Frances HILDERBRAND McNac, born c.1858, Hilderbrand Mill, Delaware District, Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation, d. 9 Oct 1903, Illinois District, Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation. Her father was Stephen HILDERBRAND, Cherokee Indian, b. Apr, 1833, Cherokee Nation East, d. 1 Aug 1899, Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation. Her mother was Susie, presumed African slave. Susie was owned by Peter HILDERBRAND, Stephen's grand uncle.
Peter commanded a detachment of Cherokees from McMinn County, Tn., on the Trail of Tears, in 1838. According to an 1835 census in McMinn County Peter (HELDERBRAND) owned 2 male and 6 female slaves. I suspect Susie was one of the females. Susie died prior to 1901. Wanting to know more about Susie and other slaves belonging to Peter.
