Hi Leigh! just found your message - i have been doing research on the Hiler family for a bit now/ i have Caroline Hiler born Aug. 3, 1825 married Amos Hawks on 1-2-1845/ &
that she died Sept. 29, 1898 at the age of 73 years old.
Caroline was the daughter of Barbara Ely (who
was born in Philadelphia PA-no other info has been found that i know of, other than the fact that she may have had two brothers named George & Christopher) & John Hiler
bc 1765 in Wurttemberg, Germany .
family word-of-mouth has it that John Hiler was originally Johann Von Highler - possibly an only son - who was sent to the U.S. circa 1788-1780 to keep him from being drafted into another German war that was being fought in Europe - he may have been about age 15 or so. He stayed with the Ely family in PA and ended up marrying the dau.
Barbara - the legend continues that when the
war was settled, his father sent for him to come home and he wouldn't- as he had started a family here - so his father sent word to him that he was officially "disinheriting" him!! [i would love to know what he lost out on that deal? ]
John & Barbara moved to Cincinnati OHIO
circa 1806 , and eventually were in Brown Co.
OH when he died around 1840-50. They had 15 children together, of which, Caroline is listed as the youngest. Caroline's brother,
George, married a Katherine Hawks - which i
believe is Amos' sister. And two of her older sisters married two Courts' brothers - which is where my family line is - i am a direct descendant of John Courts who married
let me know if this helps - charlotte
