Mahlion Wayland Hiler/Hyler

I've hit a dead end. The oldest person I can locate in my family tree is Mahlion Wayland Hiler/Hyler. Memebers of my family have an old tin-plate photo of him which has his name written on the back using the "Hyler" spelling.
I show him born in 1812 either in Ohio or New Jersey; and he died 1870 in Sparta, Kent, MI. I show he married Emily L. Poats and had at least three children; Milo (Mylo?) Elsworth, Lydia A., and Mary Isophene.

I'm looking for any further information on Mahlion and especially and information on his parents. Any data showing a link back to Europe would be icing on the cake.

Mike :)
