Reflecting on it, you're quite right--all too few people are rigorous with their sources. I am a scientist by training and so want to do a rigorous job to the extent data allows. Census records are great from 1850 on and some early New England towns were good too (e.g. Groton CT). But there is often a difficult gap in the first part of the 1800s. I think that church records might be the next frontier for genealogy. Many thanks for your help thus far.
