DEAR BEN: Do you know from where in England your grandfather came from, and when he was
born? John is a common name in the Hindley
family (i.e. my mother's maiden name), but - although it's a Northern name - my family appeared to have been based in London (Islington/Camden) back to the 1860s. My mother told me that my grandparents received a visitor from Canada during the 2nd World War; this man appeared to be a relative but, as children did not ask questions (!!) in those days, it was not known if he was from Grandad's side or Grandmother's.
Don't know if this is any help. Good luck!
Regards: Janis King.
