I was excited to see we finally have a Hintermeister Family Genforum.
I am searching for any info on the family of Gustav HINTERMEISTER, born March 30, 1852 and his wife, Anna Elizabeth SCHNEIDER. It is believed Gustav was born in Zurich, Switzerland and was the son of Hans Jakob HINTERMEISTER and Anna MEYER. He was orphaned at the young age of 3 and may have been raised by an aunt until he was 12.
According to the 'Germans to America' series, Gustav came to America in 1875. Five year earlier, Anna Schneider's parents and their 6 children (including Anna) had come to America.
On Feb. 18, 1878, (in IL.) Gustav HINTERMEISTER married Anna Elizabeth SCHNEIDER (who was born April 17, 1850, Bern (Berne), Switzerland). They had a seventeen-acre farm about 20 minutes from Bern. They had dairy cows. While working in the fields, the children would stop to listen to the beautiful sounds of the church bells and the clock tower in Bern.
Anna, who sometimes used her middle name, Elizabeth, was the oldest daughter of Johann (John) SCHNEIDER and Christina STUKE of Bern, Switzerland. As mentioned previously, Johann and Christina brought their six children to the U.S. in 1870. Before sailing, the children learned poems about their new home - America. It would have been a sad time for Johann (John) and his children, when Christina died less than 2 years later.
The 1870 census lists the SCHNEIDER children as:
Elizabeth (Anna), 20
Ottof (Adolf), 12
and Caroline, 6.
Their ages may be off a bit. One U.S. census lists their surname as SNIDER.
Gustav (Gus) and Anna married in Rock Island County, IL. - (1878). They raised their nine children on a farm close to Andalusia, IL. (Rock Island County).
The nine children of Gustav HINTERMEISTER and Anna Elizabeth SCHNEIDER are:
John HINTERMEISTER - born in 1879
Lucy - 1880
Albert - 1882
Mary - 1884
Rosa - 1886
Gus - 1888
Julia - 1889
Annie - 1891
Nellie - 1894
If you would like to share any info. on the HINTERMEISTER or SCHNEIDER families, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.
