Hi
I am trying to trace a Charles Herd/Hird, His name sounded to my ears like Herd, but could have been Hird.
I only met him once when he came from Ontario Canada to visit my mother his cousin, shortly after WW2.
During their convrsation I recalled some names I heard mentioned, such as Paddison and Copeland, also U heard my mother telling him that her mother had been born in Derby, I was not aware then of the circumstances as to why my grandparents had been in Canada and my mother was born there in 1896.
The facts of that had to wait until I began to research my family a few years ago.
My grandfather and his two sister Grace & Laura had been sent to Canada in 1885, Grace married Augustus Gartland in 1894, and they lived in Deseronto, Laura married Lawrence Yokker, a Dutchman in Hamilton Ontario, Laura died in 1950 and is buried in the Hamilton graveyard, so too is a Charles Hird. Could he be the same one I wondered.
Correspondece with the Canadian relatives ceased a few years after that visit I used to write to a "cousin Eleanor" do`nt know what her surname was, my mother addressed and posted the envelopes, was she connected to
Charles?
My grandfather & his sisters surname was Geoghan but was changed to Gagan. Is there any connection to the Charles Hird you are seeking?
Maud
