Josiah HITCHINGS from New Boston, NH, to St. Stephen, NB, 1784
Hello,I was wondering if anyone is researching the family of Josiah HITCHINGS who was living with his wife and children in New Boston, NH, in the early 1780's...In 1784, he moved his family to Canada, and settled in what is now .. St. Stephen, NB.
One of his sons was Robert Hitchings. And, his name is mentioned in a document .. in regards to my ancestor, Calvin KIDDER.
My main research is KIDDER.In 1750, three Kidder brothers left Westford (Chelmsford), MA, to help found New Ipswich, NH.Joseph Kidder moved his family to the next town, Temple, NH.One of his younger sons was Calvin Kidder, b1765 New Ipswich, NH.He is no longer in the area by 1785...Someone found out that he had gone to Canada.
He is not known to be a Loyalist, but he could have been a Sympathizer. There are no records of him until the 1790's, but new information shows that he might have migrated to New Brunswick in 1783 or 1784.
Last week I found an on-line version of the book, "Annals of Calais, Maine, and St. Stephen, New Brunswick..."In the book I found mention of both a HITCHINGS and a MOORE family from New Boston, NH, as having traveled to Canada in 1784 .. and settled in what is now St. Stephen.
(Sorry, I can no longer find that on-line book.)
Calvin Kidder was married in St. Andrews in 1798, and had his son in St. Stephen in late January 1799.Not 3 weeks later, Calvin was killed in a boating accident. ...We have ..no clue.. what happened to his widow, Mrs. Mary (Greenlaw) Kidder. But, in 1817, when the son would have been turning 18 .. a legal document was found which mentions both the son, J. Calvin Kidder, and .. Robert HITCHINGS.I am curious whether Robert Hitchings became a Guardian for young Calvin.
