I have never before, found a site or a posted message with the name HJORTAAS so was surprised and pleased to find this one as my husbands original family name was (and still is for the family in Norway) Hjortaas. I'm afraid I know little about the family and in fact I may be off base thinking that there could be a connection with what you have posted on your Hjortaas' and our family but wonder about a family connection? All I know is that the grandfather Johannes(John) Hjortass -the name became Gunderson once they settled in Canada- emigrated to Canada via New York in 1895. He returned to Norway and married in 1913 and then came back to Canada. One of his sons, was my father in law. Like to hear from you. Please email me direct if you wish.
