I am in the same boat with Rhodes Hoag, my 3rd great grandfather
Birth 1809inNew York
Death 21 Apr 1873inAnamosa, Jones, Iowa, USA

Is there any chance that you have a reference to a Rhodes Hoag? The earliest source I can find beside family history references is the 1850 US Census which shows him in Villenova, Chautuaqua County, New York.
