Dear Jim,
As you can see my maiden name is Hobbins. I am quite interest in joining whatever Hobbins group you can gather. Here's as much as I know which, admittedly, is a paltry sum. With a rare name like Hobbins one would think if you could find one person you'd link to them all, go figure:

James Frances Hobbins
b.1880 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
d. abt. 1942 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Mother & father both born in Ireland.
married to:
Emma James
b. 1881 Pennsylvania
d. 1937 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
mother and father both born in Pennsylvania

What I've found so far:

At the Church of the Latter Day Saints website I was able to find in the PA 1880 Census a James Hobbins, age 1 mos., born in Philadelphia, PA with an older sister named Margaret, age 1 year. She is born the same year & has the same name of my grandfather's sister:

Head of household: Michael Hobbins, age 26,
occupation: boltmaker, b.Ire
Wife: Julia Hobbins, age 28, b. IRE.
Daughter: Margaret, age 1
Son: James age 1 mo.

I have also found a Michael HOBBINS with a Julia
Hobbins listed as widow:
Civil War Pension Index
Name: Michael Hobbins
"invalid" June 6, 1876
"widow" (Julia): Nov.14,1884
Victor Levin, Guardian
Don't know if these are application dates or
certification dates.

The Phila. 1890 city directory has a Julia DORSEY as
widow of Michael HOBBINS.

On 1910 PA Census Miracode there is the following:
Head of household: James HOBBINS(29)b.PA; Parents: IRE.
Wife: Elizabeth (38) b. PA
Brother: John HOBBINS(28)b.PA Parents:IRE
Sister in law: Carrie HOBBINS(29)b.GER Parents:GER
Mother: Julia DORSEY (64)widow; b. IRE; Parents: IRE
Stepsister: Anna DORSEY (19) b. PA; Parents: IRE
Stepsister: Mame DORSEY (17) b. PA; Parents:IRE

1920 PA Census:
Head of household: James Hobbins; age 39; b. PA
occupation: postal clerk;father: IRE; mother: IRE
Wife: Emma; age 39; occupation: bakery
Step-Daughter: Ruth Steadman; age 11; b. MD
Step-Son: Richard Steadman; age 9; b. PA
Ruth and Richard are children from Grandmother Hobbins' first marriage to a Richard Steadman.
Please note that the wrong first name of George is given for my grandfather on the 1920 PA Census.

On the 1930 PA Census I found my grandfather living on a street my father had told me he visted relatives as a child. It is in Philadelphia, only about a street or so from where my father grew up. My father had told me that his father only lived with him and his mother off and on.
1930 PA Census:
Head of household: John McPHILLIP
(36 b.PA; parents: Scotland)
Wife: Anna (39) b. PA; father:IRE, mother:IRE
Brother in law: James HOBBINS,Sr (50;married)b. PA; occupation: postal clerk; father:IRE; mother: IRE
Sister in law: Mame(single age37) with a last
name DORSEY crossed out & HOBBINS written in;
father:IRE mother:IRE
Paul HOBBINS(nephew age 14) b. PA; father:PA,

I believe this Mame is the same person I found
listed w/ my grandfather in 1910. I don't know
whose child this Paul Hobbins is. I can not find a
Paul Hobbins on any state's census that fits with his age in 1930. I'm wondering if Paul may be the child of my grandfather Hobbins' brother John and a different wife or,if
the James Hobbins I have from 1910 is my correct one, Paul is a child from my grandfather's first marriage to Elizabeth. In any event my father had never mentioned a Paul Hobbins.

1930 PA Census:
Head of household: Emaa Hobbins; age 49; b. PA
Daughter: Ruth Hobbins; age 22; b. MD;occupation: artist;
father:b.MD; mother: b.PA
Son: Richard Hobbins; age 19, b. PA;
father: b. MD; mother: b. PA
Son: James Hobbins; age 8; father:b. PA; mother: b. PA
This is my father, James Frances Hobbins,JRwas born
b.5/27/1921; d. 10/1987.
Please note that 1930 PA Census has the surname misspelled as HOPPINS.

As I mentioned above, in 1930 grandmom and grandpop Hobbins are living apart but grandpop Hobbins was just living very nearby.

I have 2 sisters and a brother, named Jim. He is married and has 2 daughters and has 2 sons. James F. Hobbins, IV that only lived a day and another son, Timothy Michael, now age 8. So the Hobbins name will hopefully carry on in Pennsylvania.
Best regards,
Lois Hobbins Mitchell
