George, Yarcombe, Devon 1796
In the area of Combe St. Nicholas were two hamlets going back to Domesday. One was called Hockey. This maybe the roots of the Hockey family. My first known Hockey ancestor was Thomas. He and wife, Mary, had William, Mary, Anna, James and George. George Hockey born 1796 in Yarcombe, Devon, his wife was Grace Manning. They had Thomas and James 1816, Broadway, Somerset; George, Grace and Mary Ann in Yarcombe, Devon.Thomas married Mary Goldsworth and had Mary Ann, Thomas, Grace, James, Elizabeth and Anna. James born 1843 Uplyne, Devon married Elizabeth Collier. They had James, Eliz, William(George),Henry, Alfred, Arthur, Charles, Flossie, Hester, Gertrude and Mabel. James, Alfred and William George came to USA 1890's and their father James joined them in Iowa where he spent the remaining of his years.Elizabeth and rest of family stayed in England.I have been informed that there was a non-conformist group that left England for New Zealand but the ship wrecked off Green Point South Africa and that many Hockey decendents are there today.I hope to see posts from all.
