Hi Mary, As for my own experience, the name became interchangeable the farther that I researched records back to the Netherlands. However I have found that this is generally true for most surnames. You will find many variations due to transcriber error and the fact that the population may not have been literate. Once my people hit America this stopped as I only go back 2 generations here. My VDHoeks lived in Goes ,Zeeland and prior to that lived in Zierkzee. That is as far back as I go. Sandra
