Heffler/Hofler DNA
My name is Max Heffler from Houston, Texas (max _AT_ texsys.com).
My grandfather was born with surname Höfler in 1898 in what is now Western Ukraine, once Austria-Hungary, Poland and Galicia. His brother emigrated as Hefler and they settled on Heffler in the states. I am researching the various sound-alike branches and recently taken advantage if DNA testing.
There are two methods to male Y-DNA:
The free Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation test at:
http://www.smgf.org/pages/overview.jspx
where it takes about a year to get into the database and there is no guarantee they put every sample into the database. I have been 3 for 3 so far. They request a family tree be submitted but there is no way to tie the sample to any living person.
Other methods include pay sites like Family Tree DNA:
http://www.familytreedna.com/about.html
where a 12-marker test costs $149 and takes a couple of months to get the results. I administer a Heffler Surname DNA project at Family Tree DNA:

sfeld/index.aspx
which reduces the standard 12-marker test at the $149 individual rate to a
$99 surname group rate if ordered via that page.
I encourage male Heffler (and variant spellings) to participate in one or both of these tests to determine how many unique branches there might be to this uncommon surname. Just because my grandfather was born in what is now Ukraine doesn't mean there can't be connections to branches from Germany, etc.
Please consider taking one or both tests and if you have taken one of these tests, let me know so that I can be on the lookout for the results.
