Hello there,
I am researching a man called Louis O'Farrell (or Farrell) who was married to Ellen O'Hanlon and lived close by in Baggot Street. I noticed that Patrick Hogarty and Louis Farrell were often witnesses for births, weddings etc in each family. In fact, Louis O'Farrell was a witness to the wedding of Patrick and Ellen and vice versa. Like Patrick, Louis was also a victualler. I came across this story about him today. It would be interesting to know if this friendship came from their profession or whether there is a family connection.
Lord Mayor's Court
Sanitary Protection
Lewis Farrell, victualler, Lower Baggot Street, appeared to answer the complaint of Myles Lyons that he had sold him, on Saturday 27th April, a cow's head, which upon being boiled on the next day, emitted a horrible odour and was quite uneatable. Complainant brought the cow's head to the sanitary officers of the Corporation on the following Monday and they submitted it for analysis to Dr Cameron, who pronounced that it was putrid and unfit for human food. In his defence Mr Farrell said that the animal to which the head had belonged was slaughtered on the same day with others, the heads of which had been sold on the same days that complainant purchased the one which formed the subject of his complaint. The Lord Mayor held that the case had been proved and fined the defendant 5s with costs.
And so back to Patrick Hogarty.
*A woman called Catherine Keating was the second witness to his wedding.
*Patrick Hogarty was recorded as living at 2 Denzille Street in 1850
*Did your William marry a Margaret Bennett by any chance?
*Children born to Patrick...
Mary 1849
James 1851
Laurence 1852
William Peter 1854
Patrick Joseph 1855
Michael Joseph 1858
Alicia Ellen 1860
The names Donnelly and Keating are witnesses many times for the births.
I did find a Patrick Hogarty born in the same parish as the weddings and births. The parents listed are Laurence and Mary. The baptism is in 1815. Witnesses Richard McGrane and Mary Ann Kelly.
