Johannes (Johanes, Pitt Hogle) and his son Francis (age about 7 years) were killed by Indians from Canada & buried on the banks of Hoosac River in Cohoha corn fields.
His son John was an officer in Col. John Peters, Queens Loyal Rangers.Led by Lt. Col. Frederick Baum of German Brunswick Dragoons, near Bennington, VT, they opposed the Patriots, led by Gen. Stark who had 1500 men, including the Green Mountain Boys, on 15 Aug 1777.Baum entrenched his Dragoons, Indians and Infantry on top of a prominent hill, overlooking Walloomsac River, near Bennington, and awaited orders for supplies from Gen. Burgoyne. There was rain and heavy mist that day, and Flint lock guns could not be used, so action was delayed until the morning of 16 Aug 1777.They were attacked from all sides, causing much confusion amongst the German troops and the Indians left.Capt. John Hogle, wearing a white tie, died that morning, shot between the eyes as he fired from an aperture in the Tory Redoubt.John was buried by a friend, named Wilkins, an office of the same Regiment.
A patriot Nathaniel Wallace of Pownal, VT, claimed he had crept up close to the Redoubt where the Tories would fire and step down to reload.Noticing a young man with a white necktie, he waited, positioned his rifle just in time to see the head and white tie appear, fired and the head disappeared. After the capture of the Redoubt, Wallace found the body of the young man with a bullet hole between the eyes. Two hundred plus prisoners were taken. All the Tory dead are presumed to have been buried at the Redoubt.
I included the above because I thought it was an interesting story of how Capt. John died and who claimed to have killed him.
John and Elizabeth's sons who were UEs were:
Sebastion (Bastion) Hogle, born 29 Mar 1767, died 23 Aug 1828, Ernestown Twp., Lennox and Addington Co., Ontario, Canada
James (Jacobus) Hogle, born 1 Aug 1770, died 23 Mar 1844, Ernestown Twp., Lennox and Addington Co., Ontario, Canada(this is my line)
Francis Hogle, born 1773, Little White Creek, NY, died 1820, Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada.
Their other children were:
John Hogle, born 31 Oct 1765, died ca1778
Benjamin Garvis Hogle, born 5 June 1775, died young before 1787
Sincerely,
LucyON
