John Makean Holbert Family
In an effort to stimulate a little interest in this forum, I am posting a project in the works on John Makean Holbert. There may be some errows in this but thats another reason for the post.
John Makeam Holbert, the third son born to John & Sarah "Sally" Wells Holbert was born sometime between the ages of 1801-1809 according to the census enumators for the years of 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. Until I find a definite date I will take the average birth date of 1804. John was born in Rutherford County, NC. John married 1st ca 1833 Rebecca King b 1810 in South Carolina. I have not found the parents of Rebecca at this time. The following children were born in Rutherford County, NC :
#1..........John O ( John Omay not have been a child of John and Rebecca's due to the fact that he was not found in any census from the years 1850-1880, but he married 1839 and most likely would have been out of the Household of John and Rebecca in those years) b 1823, d after 1880 probably in Sulpher Springs, Hopkins County, TX,married Nancy Evelyn Griffith about 1839, b 1827, Nancy died aftr 1880 probably in Sulpher Springs, Hopkins County, TX where the family was located in the 1880 census., their children were Amanda b 1843, Josephine b 1844, Marvin Greenberry b 1 March 1846, Martha b 1847 married a Faithy, and Frances Holbert b 1849. There may have been others.
#2..........H Marvel b 7 Feb 1830 in Rutherford County, NC, d 10 July 1910 in Franklin County, TX. Marvel Holbert's history is of most interest. He came to Texas with his father, John Makean Holbert, and he lived in Franklin County, Texas. Marvel became a mystery of sorts on this branch of the family tree when Margie Hardis (a George Holbert descendent) found the trunk of Marvel from an advertisement ... She ran an ad for the rightful heirs to lay claim on this trunk, which had found its way to the Waxahachie area of Texas. The contents of the trunk had many pictures, insurance papers, land deeds of the 1800's. The ad went national and can be found even today on PERSI (The Allen County periodical index). The trunk held a very important clue--an old handwritten copy of John Holbert's will from Rutherford County, NC in 1821."John married 10 Oct 1865 in TX Nancy.Nancywas born 13 March 1839 in VA and she died 1925 in Saltillo, Franklin County, TX. "Marvel Holbert moved to Texas in 1851 and joined the Missionary Baptist Church in Giles County. He is listed on the 1860 Harrison County, Texas federal census as age 26 and an overseer to the farm of G. Perry of North Carolina birth. He joined the confederate army in October 1861, the 11th Texas Calvary. Served the 7th Infantry at Port Hudson, LA, was wounded twice and was discharged in April 1865. Marvel was laid to rest at the Old Saltillo Cemetery in 1910.We have a picture of his tombstone, dated his birth at 1830, despite his numerous claims to the 1834 date. Wife Nancy E. is buried there, as well as his children Mary E. Holbert and Joseph and Stella, Joe Eggleston Holbert and Ada.The trunk and the contents were never again seen by the family."
