Holders of Harnett county, NC>
Hi,
I am Rob Burdsal ([email protected]) phone (540) 288-1080, and am researching the Holder part of my family history.I've spent several years in my research and I actually have quite a bit - but I am still lacking in a few items.
My Grandfather is Virgil Burdsal who married Mamie Ruth Holder from Sanford, Harnett, NC.Her Dad was Allen Zimri Holder, Mack Holders father as well.I knew "Zim" - my Dad told me several times he pretty well gambled and/or drank away quite a bit of the family acreage.I can go back from Zim to his father, William Henry (and I have those family records) and to his Father, George Vincent Holder (I have that family sorted out fairly well I believe). From there it goes back to George Holder and at that point I totally stall out.George is on a tax list of 1784 in Samson County (if this is the right George - there was another near Winston-Salem part of the Moravian group there) and I know George purchased some acreage in 1766 in Duplin county. It was located on the West side of the Great Cohera River and in the fork of the "Beaver Dam" (wherever that puts us).
Has any one's research come upon this last George Holder from the 1700s?I'm truly stuck with him.I was hoping I might come upon him in Revolutionary records, or perhaps he's from Scotland as so many are who settled near the Upper Little River (the Fear River having already been populated by lowland Scots and Irish).GrandMom Burdsal(Mamie Ruth Holder) often told us we were "Scotch-Irish).I think I may have the Irish part figured out, but not the Scottish - but maybe that's George?I am glad to share my Holder information with others. Can anyone help me in turn?
For all Zimri Holder's family I've been successful in tracking down many of his children, but I'm still stuck with no information on:Lucy Holder, born 1906, Mildred, born 1914 and never married, Foy Holder, born 1915 and apparently never married, Mack Holder (I was told he joined the Army and fought in Italy somewhere), Emma Polly born 1924 (who moved to New York somewhere), Gineva Holder, 1926 who I was told married a Marine and moved to California somewhere), and finally Allen Lory, born 1930.Of Allen Zim's father's children I've successfully chased down all of them except:Marvin K. Holder who was born in 1885.Recently a lady contacted me to let me know she was his Granddaughter so perhaps I'll figure that one out too.
Long ago my Dad and Mom visited the Holder farm during the winter and told me it was "down in a Hollow and one had to climb out of the 2nd story bedroom window and follow a rope down to the barn in order to feed the animals and milk the cow.I've been tothat place many times myself, although I believe a gas station now sits on its site.Too bad since family stories tell of Allen Zimri burying many large glass jars filled with money in his back yard versus using a bank.
OK, that's everything I know.I wrote a local elementary school to see if there was a place where old school records or even photos might be kept.I did get an interim response but nothing since that time.
