SHREVEPORT, LA - Services for Comiel Holladay Kendall will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 21, 2009, at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Pat Day, Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Shreveport. nterment will follow in Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
A native of Louisiana, Comiel was born in Zwolle, LA on September 8, 1918 and passed away Thursday, December 17, 2009. She was a graduate of Bastrop High School, received her B.S. degree in Business from Louisiana Tech University and her M.S. degree plus 30 hours in Business Administration and Guidance and Counseling from Northwestern State University. She also did graduate studies at the University of Virginia.
Comiel was a member of the Theta Upsilon Sorority and Kappa Delta Pi Education Fraternity.
Comiel worked as office assistant and taught many years at Homer High School. After leaving Homer in 1959 to teach in Caddo Parish, the 1969 yearbook, The Homer Pelican, was dedicated to her for her willingness to help in all phases of school activities. She also taught at Vivian, Oak Terrace and Youree Drive and served as Counselor and Administrative Coordinator at Captain Shreve High School. Upon her retirement in 1973, she worked as Counselor at Southfield School for eight years. She was recognized for her love and concern for her students.
A loyal member of First United Methodist Church of Shreveport, Comiel was an honorary member of the Church Council, a member of Circle 7 and the Maida Mickle Sunday School class and volunteered in many capacities until she became legally blind in 1999.
In 2007 Comiel was honored at the annual Homer Heritage Invitational Golf Tournament by naming her Honorary Captain of the event, and was presented a plaque for her integrity, citizenship and unselfish contributions to the community while teaching there from 1941-1958.
She loved teaching, enjoyed participating in the Women's Department Club, the Garden Club, the Book Circle, and treasured her friends, church and her profession.
Her husband of 45 years, Philip B. Kendall; her parents, Hattie Pilgreen Holladay and Robert E. Holladay, Jr.; her brothers, Lt. Commander Samuel Charles Holladay and John Rayford Holladay; and her stepmother, Lucille C. Holladay, preceded Comiel in death.
Survivors are her son, Philip Barteld Kendall, Jr. and wife, Renee' of Anchorage, AK; daughter, Jan Kendall Christian and husband, Jimmie Kay Christian of Shreveport, LA; four grandsons, Philip Barteld Kendall, III and wife, April of Longview, TX; Major Jason Bradford Kendall and wife, Nikki; Cabot Brady Kendall and wife, Staci all of Bossier City, LA; and Robert Brandon Kendall of Anchorage, AK; six great grandchildren, Arielle, Bethany, Tanner, Collin, Conner and Christopher Kendall; brother, Robert E. Holladay, III of Ruston, LA; Linda Rainey Ray and husband, Jimmy Ray of Shreveport, LA; sister-in-law, Jean Johnson of Brazil, IN; Dr. Robert E. Holladay, IV and wife, Peggy; Tom Holladay and wife, Sharon; Barbara Holladay Alexander; and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles L. Black, Jr. Bill B. Boyd, Charles G. Fitzpatrick, Donald L. Kennedy, Fred J. Liner, Dr. James Robert Michael, Stanley M. Powell and the members of the Maida Mickle Sunday School Class.
