I think I might have found some evidence on the question whether Ezekiel Holliman's second wife, the widow Mary (maiden name unknown) Sweet, was born a Westcott.
I BELIEVE that, at the Rhode Island Historical Society Research Library in Providence, in their manuscript collection, are three linear feet of old handwritten records from 1642 and after titled the "Warner Papers". While I have not seen them personally, according to a researcher by the name of John Chandler, the papers include a statement from a John Warner, in April 1685, to the effect that Amos Westcott was a "cousin" of Renewed Gereardy. Because Amos Westcott was the son of immigrant Stukeley Westcott, many have inferred that Mary (MNU) (Sweet) Holliman MIGHT have been born a Westcott. There is one other possibility, however. Amos Westcott and Renewed (Sweet) Gereardy could have been cousins if their MOTHERS were sisters. I believe Amos Westcott was the son of Stukeley Westcott's second wife, Rosannah (Hill) Westcott, so it is also possible that the second Mrs. Ezekiel Holliman was born Mary Hill.
I do not know of anyone who has researched the possibility (and shared any results) that Mary was born a Hill. Until this possibility is researched and either confirmed OR ruled out, any inference that she was born Mary Westcott has to remain TENTATIVE (OR the Westcott "theory" must be researched and either confirmed OR ruled out).
Does anyone have any information on this issue? Please post a reply if you do.
