Spencer HOLTON family, Middletown Delaware
Is anyone here related to the HOLTEN family of the Middletown or West St George's Hundred area of New Castle County, Delaware?
Spencer HOLTEN was born 1803; married to Mary Anne ELIASON in 1826. I am still looking for his parents. I think Spencer's brother may have been Jesse HOLTEN, also of St George's Hundred, Delaware.
There are probably very few descendents of this family. Please help.
My ancestor is Spencer's son Sewall S. HOLTEN, whose wife was Mary Frances ELLISON.
Please Note: There are some errors in documentation which might make it hard for cousins to conect with us. Please check your files:
Due to poor quality of certain images of census pages, Sewall S HOLTEN's first name has been transcribed incorrectly in at least two census indexes. His name appears in the index to the 1880 fed census as "HOLTEN, TERRILL S". On the census index for 1870, his name was misinterpreted as "Lewis Holten." These are transcription errors --he is my great-great grandfather, and his name was Sewell S HOLTEN.
Some of the census records list the birth place as Maryland; others say Delaware.
Spencer HOLTEN and family in the 1850 census, St Georges Hundred, New Castle County, Del. were:
Spencer HOLTEN, 46, farmer; [b. 1803]
Mary A. 41; [Mary Anne ELIASON, wife, b. 1808]
Ann E. HOLTEN, 21,
Sarah J HOLTEN, 16;
Sewall S HOLTEN, 14,
Randolph HOLTEN, 10,
Mary L. HOLTEN, 8,
Andrew E. HOLTEN, 6,
William M. HOLTEN, 2.
Spencer HOLTEN died in 1870. By the time of the 1870 census, two of his sons are heads of household.
In the 1870 census index, Spencer's son, Sewall HOLTEN lives at Glasgow, Pencader Hundred, Delaware, with wife Mary Frances ELLISON (no children yet). His brother Randolph HOLTEN is located on a farm at Port Penn, St Georges Hundred, Delaware, with family members, Mary, 27 (his sister); Mary, 57 (their mother, Mary Ann ELIASON), Andrew E. 25 (a brother), and William M., 22 (a brother).
From other census records I have found, it appears that Sewall's brothers, Randolph and William M HOLTEN, married late and probably also had no children. William eventually married a woman named "Ida J." I'm not sure about Andrew. And, did any of his sisters marry?
I hope those who have Sewall HOLTEN listed in their databases under the incorrecrt name(s) will make the appropriate corrections. Sewall had a daughter Mary May (1876-1964) and one son, Curtis Bennet Ellison Holten (1872-1939). Curtis B E Holten had six children, but only one son, who had no children. Of Curtis B E Holten's five daughters (born 1902-1918; lived southern NJ) there were only seven children between them.
Please look for a "Lewis" or a "Terrell" HOLTEN in your records, so we can reconnect these families. Please look for Ann, Sarah, and Mary HOLTEN, born Delaware or Maryland 1820 - 1850. Please look for recurrance of the first-names, Spencer, and Sewall.
I would like to hear from descendents of any of these.
Thanks very much,
Liz J
