This is very interesting. Beverly Smith Holtzman deposed for my great-great-grandfather's brother Joseph A. Beddinger/Bedinger for his Mexican War pension application. It seems that Beverly Smith Holtzman was a cousin of Joseph. The relationship goes through the mother of Joseph, Margarethe Schindel/Margaret Shingle, also called Schenkel, who was no doubt a sister to your Barbara. Joseph was also taught the blacksmithing trade by B. S. Holtzman's father. Barbara and Margaret's parents were Magdalena and Lorentz Schindel. Several of their children (and Holtzman) were christened at Thurmont Apples Church.
