We worked on this book for about six years, gathering material from everyone we could talk to, and there were just three of us volunteers doing it in our spare time. Some we spoke to had been keeping records in cigar boxes, etc., and many had only the vaguest notion of their family's past. Several hundred of the family had no interest whatsoever and others, suspicious of our motives, withheld what they knew. So it kind of went the whole gamut of cooperation. We still find people every week who are just now learning about us, or who are just learning that they are Honaker descendants. So our work is never done.

The book introduction asks people to send in any additional information they have that did not appear in the book, because we did not know it at the time the book was published in 1998.

We keep an ongoing supplement to the book, presently over 2,000 pages, on CD-ROM. We would be very grateful if you could bring your family up to date with us, and we will add it to the supplement. If the day comes when we can afford a second edition of the book, all the supplement information will be put in place where it belongs. For now, it is listed by chapter and paragraph so it's easy to tell what's been added to each paragraph since the book was published.

So the short answer to your question is that we just didn't know about your family. If the book were published today, it would go more than twice as big as when it was published in 1998.

Please send any info, in any format, by e-mail or by post to us at P.O. Box 3636, Alexandria VA 22302-0636. We'd love to have it. We are especially interested in obituaries, with name of newspaper and place published if known.

Kind regards, your cousin, Tom Hanlin, volunteer
