Hay Battaile Hoomes, born in 1816, and died in 1880, was the seventh of eight children born to Richard Hoomes, born on March 28, 1784; died on Dec. 27, 1823, and Hannah Battaile. Richard Hoomes was the son of Col. John Hoomes (1749-1805 and Judith Churchill Allen (1749-1822). The line goes back to the immigrant, Major John Thomas Hoomes, who came to what is now Caroline County, VA from England in the 17th century. He built a home in 1669 on 7,000 acres of land near what is now Bowling Green, VA. This early VA family was very prominate and there is a lot written about them.
