I have Hopkinsons who emigrated to Philadelphia ca. 1831 (siblings Francis, Ann, and Rebecca the young widow of John Taylor). As far back as I can take it I find William and Mary Hopkinson in Alfreton, Derbyshire, born abt 1772. They seem to have been textile workers, though one of the emigrants, Francis, was a self-styled "professor of music" as of 1870 in Oregon. I don't know what took them to Philadelphia ... family connections? Wish I knew.
