Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately none of the details you mention ring any bells. 'My' Thomas had a son in Mirfield in 1809 which means he will be much older than the Thomas you mention. I have one other Thomas Hopkinson on my tree and he was born in 1842 in Mirfield. He was still in Mirfield by the time of the 1881 census and listed as a cloth fuller. It seems unlikely that he would up sticks in 1882 and set up a factory on the other side of the world. Good luck with your family tree.
