AUTOS COLLIDE; GIRL IS KILLED
Ethel Hopp, Daughter of Film Official, Hurled Through Glass.
Edition: Chicago Tribune
Miss Ethel Hopp, 19 year old daughter of Joseph Hopp, secretary of the Union Film company at 166 West Washington street, was killed last evening when two limousines collided at Wrightwood and Lake View avenues.
Miss Hopp, her mother, and her older sister, Miss Pearl Hopp, had started downtown to meet Mr. Hopp. They had just left their home at 454 Wrightwood avenue. The machine was driven by the family chauffeur, Joseph Wagner of 2066 Orchard street. Wagner drove east in Wrightwood avenue, and was turning south in Lake View avenue when the machine was struck in the middle by another car speeding south.
Three Seated Together.
The three women were sitting on the rear seat Miss Hopp was on one side, Mrs. Hopp on the other, and Miss Pearl Hopp in the middle.
The cars came together with a crash that was heard at the Columbus Memorial hospital, a short distance away, and nurses and internes from that institution came to their aid.
Miss Ethel Hopp was hurled through the glass windows to the street. She received a fracture of the skull and died a few moments after being carried to the hospital. Mrs. Hopp and her other daughter were thrown violently against the front part of the car, but both escaped with a few cuts from broken glass and bruises. Their injuries were treated at the hospital and they were taken home.
Chauffeur Alone in Second Car.
The second car was driven by C.R. Thompson, a chauffeur employed by Caspar Brauer, 427 Roscoe street, secretary of the Caf Brauer in Lincoln park. There was no one else in the machine at the time. Thompson said he had taken members of the Brauer family to their residence and was taking the car to the garage when the accident occurred.
Both chauffeurs became confused in trying to make the crossing and both increased their speeds at the same time. Each one blamed the accident on the other. Both were taken into custody by the police and are being held pending the coroner's inquest today.
Puts Blame on Wagner.
Mr. Hopp placed the responsibility for the accident on Wagner.
"We were going at only normal speed and the other car seemed to be going at a very high speed when it struck us," Mrs. Hopp said. "We were just turning into Lake View avenue and our chauffeur had no chance to get out of the way. The other man should have slowed up at the crossing. It looked to me he put on more speed to get in ahead of us after we had partly turned the corner." Memo: Front Page Record #19150129fp010
