Greetings,
I am attempting to make the link from the USA to the "Old Country" of Ireland/England. My GGF was James Gregg Hornbrook, thought to have been born in Belfast,N. Ireland; 1861/1866.
Census records show him emigrating to the U.S. c. 1880.
He possibly married Minerva Jane Watson and sired Ralph Leslie H. and Noble Augustes H. in California. c. 1885.
He did, for sure, marry Larena "Rena" Alice Strawser c. 1900 and sired three sons and one daughter: James Franklin (1st Lt. USMC), Charles Buford (my GF), Nellie, and Elmer L. Hornbrook.
He is said to have died in 1917.
Family recollections say that the family came originally from England, that they settled in Cork, and that there may have been a name change due to political/legal difficulties. The name of Hornibrook was known in Cork at that time.
It is also believed that he was a younger brother or cousin of earlier settlers in the northern WV region (Wheeling, WV).
There was also a record of a James Hornbrook in Gorham, New Hampshire matching his particulars c. 1880.
The earliest confirmed record that I have found places him in Garrett County, MD USA c. 1900. Probably as a farmer.
If anyone can shed even the smallest glimmer of information, I would very much appreciate it.
Joseph Charles Hornbrook
