In Ancestry the family is misindexed under the name Hovick in the 1870 census of Philadelphia. The name should be Horoicks by what I read. They are listed under the name Horricks in the 1860 census of Philadelphia. I could not find John in the 1850 census. All of the children going back to ca 1852 were born in PA (Ellen, William John, Alice and Charles).

Knowing Jane's maiden name could be very helpful in your quest. The death certificates, obituaries and sometimes marriage records of at least one of her children should have her maiden name.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has a large selection of Philadelphia records including church and cemetery records.
