Good Questions. John James' wife' name was Mary Kingman.
James Steven' wife' name was Lana (Olana sp?)Gates.
I have confirmed both wives on Ancestry.com using the census records.
John James had 4 sons (also confirmed by census):
James Steven b. 1839 d. 1917
Walter Bouton b. 1842 d. 1929
Charles Lucius b. 1847 d. 1923
Seymore Daniel b. 1850 d. 1926
Family comments from Mass or Conn (Dad did not leave contact info on that person) that the family line further back from John James contains pirates, etc.
My problem is that 1810-40 census records only record the the birth location of the parents. The records are skimpy prior to that time because of the transition from the oral tradition of keekping family records to the written records keeping in the census typr records.
There was records (stories and family histories from the 1850's) that show that a Barnabas Horton came to Palmyra 1in the late 1990's as one of the original founding families of Palmyra from the Wyoming Valley. The Wyoming Valley extended from north of Goshen, NY south through eastern Pennsyvania almost to North Carolina. I turns out that he was a Col. during the Revolution. He is buried in East Palmyra, NY. I can not find any connection for John James to him.
John James has a distinquished history in Jamestown, NY. I also found that John James appeared in Jamestown in the late 1830's. His obituary (29 may 1888 said he was highly involved in Jamestown politics for the just under 50 years that he had lived in Jamestown. That puts his move to Jamestown sometime after 1835-8.
Hope this helps and that you have further information about John James that will help identify his parentage.
