While this is only a small side branch in my works. I did find this. Houlton showed up several times as a given name in my Pharr family. Often men and even women were given the maiden name of a mother or grandmother. Often as just a middle name. So I began to search. The Pharr's moved from York County, Pa to Mecklenburg NC. Some including my Edward stoped for a while in Virginia. Edward married Rachel Beard in Lynchburg. This may not be what you are looking for but may help in other ways. Edward and Rachel daughter Margery mar. Joseph Wallace. The Wallaces also must have moved down from Pennsylvania. Joseph Wallace mother was Ann Houlton. She was b. 1735 in Buncombee C. NC and d. 7 Nov 1802 in Buncombee C. At some point they must have moved back to York C. Pa as her husband William Wallace d. abt 1756 in York C. Her parents were given to be Francis Houlton and Margery maiden name unknown. I tend to belive there were more marriages between the two or three family's but has not been proven as far as I know. While many of my family came from or stoped for a while in North Carolina I simply don't know enough about how the counties were formed to be of more help. I sujest you post in the county forum of what county in North Carolina you want info about. They may have more info that can help. Good Luck
