Karen,
Thank you for your contributions to the Howard family forum.I have a copy of Douglas Richardson’s new book, Plantagenet Ancestry, etc. (incidentally, my own research, with some additions by DR, is found on pp. 615-17); I searched same for a mention of these Howards.Henry Howard, *father* of Thomas, 4th duke of Norfolk, is found in the text on p. 236, but his mention is all there is concerning the family of that particular line.
To answer your question regarding Margaret’s IPM date of 1572.Her father, Thomas, Lord Audley of Walden, d.s.p.m. (for those unfamiliar with Latin terminology, “died without male heirs”) in April 1544 [1].Audley’s daughters were Margaret and Mary, the latter of whom died unmarried [2].Margaret was the sole heir to a vast fortune, largely obtained by her father as a result of his activities in dissolving the monasteries [1].After her marriage to Thomas Howard, duke of Norfolk, in 1558-59, Margaret’s husband held the Audley estate; he continued in the possession of this property after her death, which did in fact occur in 1564 [1].Possession, unlike guardianship, did not necessarily imply legal capacity to dispose of property, and since there were heirs ofthe Audley estate, Thomas’ children by Margaret, living after their parents’ deaths, the matter of inheritance was unsettled.Upon the duke’s execution and attainder in Jan. 1572 (after which his lands, titles and honors were forfeit), the issue was resolved by an inquisition, Sept. 30th of that same year (see my initial message in this thread for the full citation).
I hope this answers your question.
All the best,
Kevin
