Readers may wish to know about a HOWARTH murder. It occured in Salford Lancs, UK, on New Years Day 1902.
PETER HOWARTH (aged 44) a Carter for Salford Council, gave his wife SARAH ALICE HOWARTH (age 40) 2 shillings to buy something for dinner. However she got herself drunk. When she came home, Peter struck her with an adze and killed her. He was found guilty at Manchester Assizes and sentenced to death on 31st Jan. However, because of his previous good character his friends and colleagues presnted the Home Secretary with a petition for clemency with 32,000 signatures (including the Mayor of Salford)and on 12th February 1902 his sentence was comuted to "one of penal servitude for life".
