I found the death record of James Howat on Scotlandspeople.com Dec. 30, 1860 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. It stated he was the son of James Howat and Mary Cowan.
I found the marriage of James Howat and Mary Cowan on Jan. 8, 1809 in the Parish of Troqueer, Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. James was b. abt. 1813, and had a sister, Margaret, in 1823.
Mary Cowan might be the Mary Cowan b. in 1786 to Homer Cowan.
