A biography of John K. Howe, Hot Springs, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 872 & 873.

J.K. Howe was the son of John and Polly (Reed) Howe, natives of New England. In 1857, John went to Minnesota and was residing there when at age 23 he enlisted in Company D, 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, where for the first year he was fighting Indians in Minnesota and more western country. He was sent to St. Louis, MO, and engaged in raiding expeditions into the south, and was discharged in Minnesota.

In 1861, John married Miss Elizabeth Yolton. They had two children: Irwin (married Justine Lies, Chicago IL); Carrie (Mrs. Ed Rudd, Neosho, MO).

On 17 Sep 1876, John married Margaret Nesmith, born Schuylkill, PA, daughter of James and Agnes (McIntyre) Nesmith, natives of Scotland. Howe children: James; Mary (Mrs. John Christie, Camas, MT); Clarence (married Lulu Webb of OK, resides in MN); Hattie (Mrs. Harvey Burke, Camas Prairie, MT).

John and Margaret Howe built a valuable ranch in Montana and retired to Hot Springs, MT.

Whitefish-Mar 21-Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Nesmith Howe were held at the State Soldier's Home Chapel, and interment was in the home cemetery under the direction of S.J. Catron of Whitefish. The Rev. Harold Carlbloom, Kalispell, was the minister in charge. Pallbearers were members of the home as follows; August Boodean, William Goodland, Martin Lennon, Paul Crum, John Miller, Earl Montgomery.
