Dear Loueen, Re A.W.H. He was born the second son of William & Mary Howitt, of Derbyshire, England. Writers and poets. A.W.H. became a geologist and Gold Warden in North Gippsland. Mount Howitt is named after him. In 1861 he led the expedition to recover the bodies of Burke & Wills the explorers. He was appointed Police magistrate & Warden Crown Lands Commissioner.
21/1/1863 he married Maria (nickname 'Liney' )Boothby daughter of late Judge Boothby, Chief Justice of the Colony.
They had 5 children, William Charlton(1865-1942), Mary Edith Boothby Howitt(1866-1936), Annie Elizabeth(1868-1951)
Margaret Maude(1870-1954) & Alfred Gilbert(1872-1940). He died 7/3/1908. (Taken from the book Traveller on the Hill-top by Joy Dunnicliff. U.K.)
A.W.H.'s grandfather Thomas Howitt of Heanor,Derbyshire & my 5x grandfather William Howitt of Heanor were brothers.
