I am trying to identify the origins of Mary Emily (or Emily M.) House (also listed as Howse or Howes), who appears in the 1880 U.S. Federal census for Wisconsin as the spouse of Ira W. Bird of Jefferson, WI. That census also identifies her birthplace as Indiana, and the birthplace of both her parents as Massachusetts. Her birthplace of Indiana is confirmed by the 1930 California census, in which her son Ralph Bird lists his mother's birthplace as Indiana.
She may be the child of "A.J. Howes," found in the 1850 census for Jefferson, WI. A.J. and his wife Lydia are shown as having been born in Massachusetts, and one of their children "Mary M." who is the right age, was listed as having been born in "Indiana." At first glance, this would appear to be the right family. However, I have no further information on him or his wife, or their origins in MA.
In the obituary of Ira W. Bird (March 15, 1899), her name is given as "Mary Emily House". Yet, in "The History of Jefferson County, Wisconsin," published in 1879 (thus during Ira's lifetime), her name is given as "Emily M. Howse". She was born in either late 1839 or early 1840.
Considering how much is known about nearly all of her in-laws and relatives (on the Bird side), it is astounding that so little appears to be known about Emily. Any help is greatly appreciated.
