Thank you for the interesting info. It's very difficult to find anything comprehensive on the surname. If it might be of interest to you, my great grandfather James Highsted was born in Kent to James Highsted and Jane nee Knowler Highsted. He was sent out to Canada c. 1886 as a "Home Child" from the Barnardo Institute and worked on a farm near London Ontario. He served a time as a policeman in London Ontario, married, had two sons Claude and Kent and emigrated to Vancouver Island British Columbia settling in the small hamlet of Sominos, now part of Duncan BC. His two sons Claude (my grandfather) and his brother Kent both went on to become senior fire officers in the New Westminster Fire Dept. Highsteds in Canada are a very small branch and all of us are immediate relatives. Happy to hear from any other Highsteds and variations out there.
