I was born and live in Mathews County, Virginia. Those of us who have interests in the Hudgins family have come to the conclusion that the story about High Sheriffs and Ship Builders was probably made up by someone.
The Deggs name comes from one John Degge who patented land in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia (Now Mathews County)in 1678.I believe someone in the Hudgins family married a Degge. The name has evolved over the years and is now spelled Diggs.
Someone named William Hoggon patented land next to John Degge shortly after 1678.He may have been the ancester of the Hudgins of that area, but there is no way to trace it that I know of.
