Hi,
First, If you are interest, here is also a quick history lesson.I will make this fast and as painless as possible, I promise.Groups of families that found each other congenial companions traveled together in the time just after the Rev War.It was not uncommon for a group of families to travel south from PA through the Shenandoah Valley across Virginia and into North Carolina. This was the Great Wagon Road and it was a well-traveled highway.A large number of immigrants that arrived in Philadelphia took the time necessary to work off their passage and then traveled this road to find land that they could settle for themselves. One group included the families of the Huffstetlers, Rudisills, Costners, Heyls (Hoyles), Dellingers, Carpenters, and Bests. They did not all start together, but by the time they hit Tryon County, NC, they had formed a group of friends that would remain together. They had large families and their children grew up together and married each other. There weren't that many people in the wilderness at that point. The reason they stopped at Tryon County is that the road stopped there. This was just prior to the Revolution and crossing the mountains into Western Carolina (Tennessee) was not yet possible.
These were your ancestors. They signed the Tryon Resolveshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryon_County,_North_Carolinahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryon_County,_North_Carolinawhich was a declaration of independence in 1775.The Revolution was fought and the frontier remained closed.Tryon Co was divided into Lincoln Co and Rutherford Co and it ceased to exist. The frontier remained closed. The men that had led their families south to cross the mountains died, their children grew up, and the borders finally opened. When it was at last possible to move west, the families that had waited for so long made their choices - stay or go.Here are the family members. You can trace them down if you wish and try to find any that remained in NC.I work on the group that headed to TN.Here are the names that you need - I am sending you the Huffstetlers that were born in North Carolina going back to the first generation to be born here.
Eli's father, Michael Huffstetler was born in Buncombe NC on Jan 18, 1801 while his father waited for the way west to open as was his mother, Mary Ann Costner, born June 2, 1810 in Lincoln Co. They married in Lincoln Co, NC on Jan 16, 1828.
Their children:
Eli Huffstetler (1831-1900)
Michael A Huffstetler (1833-1910)
Margaret C Huffstetler (1840-1905)
George Huffstetler (1842-)
David Addison Huffstetler (1847-1934)
Martha F Huffstetler (1849-1926)
You mentioned Eli as a possible relative. If so then this is how your family and mine would line up - Eli and Michael Anderson Huffstetler were brothers. This is where your line and my husband's line diverge.Eli was married to Mary Ann "Polly" Carpenter (1836-1913).Their parents were Michael Huffstetler (1801-1880) and Mary Ann Costner (1810-1869).FWIW, this is the same tree that produces your very distant cousin, the actor Kevin Costner.Genealogy produces some strange results sometimes.
Eli is the grandson and Michael (1801) is the son of George Huffstetler(1764-1880) and Katherine Hoyle (1773-1823).Mary Ann "Peggy" Costner is the daughter of David "Stiff" Costner (1774-1840) and Margaret Rudisill (1794-1810)
Other children of George and Katherine Huffstetler
George Huffstetler (1791-)
Eli Huffstetler (1797-1891)
Jonas Huffstetler (1800-1832)
Susannah Huffstadler (1803-)
George Huffstetler (1805-1850)
Anne Huffstetler (1807-1888)
Catherine Huffstetler (1809-1884)
Margaret Huffstetler (1815-1876)
George's parents are Michael Huffstetler/Hochstadler b 1736 on board the ship "Harle" on the Atlantic Ocean d 1809 Gaston, NC and Elizabeth Hullett (1740-1823 div.)
These are the siblings of George Huffstetler (b 1764 in Gaston, NC)
Barbara Huffstetler (1762-1856)
Elizabeth Huffstetler (1763-1850)
Michael Huffstetler (1765-1813)
Jane Huffstetler (1770-)
Henry Huffstetler (1773-1825)
Jacob Huffstetler (1775-1814)
Peter Huffstetler (1776-1815)
John Huffstetler (1779-1829)
Adam Huffstetler (1784-)
This is the entire list that I have of the Huffstetler children that were born in North Carolina. It seems the further back you go, the more dilute the DNA marker would become, but I don't know anything of consequence about DNA.You could try tracing these people to see if any of them remained in NC.I wish you well in your recovery.
All the best with your search,
Mary Ann
