how to prove huguenot heritage

I have always been told, that the JEROME family was of huguenot descent. How can I prove this? What are the first steps to take? I know that the first Jerome in the US was Timothy Jerome, he was born in England. I was told that the Jerome family fled France to live in England. I can't go past Timothy Jerome.

Please help.
