That Orren (Aaron, phonetically -- but I think he was known as O. Hulen) was one of the many children of Arthur Hulan of Rowan County. He was very active in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, defended one of their abotitionist preachers who was being threatened (for his activities) in 1851, and is written up in that preacher's biography: Mrs. E. W. Crooks, Life of Rev. Adam Crooks, A.M. (Syracuse: Wesleyan Methodist Pub. Co., 1871), pp. 80-84. Orren's son-in-law Wm. Hurley is also mentioned in this book, p. 92; and his brother Hiram on p. 80. Hiram lost three sons to summary execution by NC home guards (Confederate militia) in 1865.

You might try any spelling that occurs to you for either the first or last name of Orren Hulen in other censuses. Like Hewland, Heullin, Ulin; just whatever.
