Lewis enlisted in Co. C. of the 3rd Minnesota Volunteers and served throughthe war, being detailed to detached duty in the quartermaster department, hewas appointed warden of the prison at Little Rock, Arkansas and served thereuntil his discharge. This regiment was mustered out at Devall's BluffArkansas on 2 September 1865 having 0 officers killed or mortally wounded, 4officers dying of disease or accident, 17 enlisted men killed or mortallywounded and 275 enlisted dying of diseases or accident. In 1865, he returned to Minnesota and again followed the milling business, finally going to California. Returning to Minnesota, some 20 years ago (i.e.,around 1880). For many years then, L. A. and Ellen Humason lived in Rochesterand came to Dodge Center at the time of the building of the mill and thisplace had practically been there home ever since. Mr. Humason, with hisfamily, came to this place (Dodge Center MN) from Rochester at the time ofthe building of our mill and he took up his residence in Dodge Center wherethey rented a home, and continued at the head of that institution until sevenyears ago, when he sold out his interests but continued to live here (DodgeCenter) until the next year when he was elected clerk of court of DodgeCounty, moving to Mantorville where he since lived. He was unanimouslyelected to his present office in 1898. His good work already demonstrates toall that he is an ideal official. He was also an enthusiastic member of theMasonic Blue Lodge and also a prominent member of the A.. O. U. W.
Abiography published in the Biographical Art Supplement to the Dodge CountyRepublican , published on November 29, 1900 in Kasson MN, described L. A.Humason as the genial clerk of court.
The sad and unexpected news of the death ofL. A.Humason, clerk of thedistrict court of Dodge county reached us on the forepart of the week thedeath coming on January 21, 1905, at age 64 years. Again, in 1902 he had beenelected to fill the same office (of Clerk of the Court) and had justcompleted a half term when he died at 3:00 in the morning, dying at his homein Mantorville, dying from that dread disease, pneumonia. He died ofcomplications arising from an attack of la-grippe, from which he had sufferedbut a week, was the cause of his death. A sad circumstance in connection withhis death was the fact that his wife was in California visiting her childrenand could not arrive until yesterday in time for the funeral; she had goneto California on account of her health, to spend the winter in California.Mr. Humason was highly esteemed by all who knew him and was a conscientiousand painstaking official. His demise is deeply deplored by all. The funeralwas held at Dodge Center yesterday, that town having been his home beforeremoving to Mantorville upon being elected clerk of court six years ago. Itwas clarified that the funeral service was held at the home in Mantorville at1 PM in the afternoon, with the remains brought to this place (Dodge Center)and laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.
