Humble Family in Durham, England; Pennsylvania, Virginia, & Kentucky -- 1700s
Has anyone established the place of origin for Uriah Humble (d. say 1773) of Bucks Co, Pennsylvania and Augusta Co, Virginia?Has anyone considered a link between him and the Humble family of Ryton, Durham?I believe the onomastic evidence favors a tentative placement of Uriah with this family group instead of the Humbles of Chester-le-Street, Durham; also Uriah was of the same religion as the Ryton Humbles.Sometime before 1738 the families of two apparent sons of Michael Humble of Ryton switched their allegiance from the Established Church of England [Church of the Holy Cross, Ryton and Church of St Oswald, Durham] to the Presbyterian sect [Ryton Woodside Presbyterian Chapel].In 1700 Gibside Colliery was sunk and Michael worked as a collier there. His apparent son Michael Humble of Birkside (in Gateshead), Durham was also a collier, working at Gateshead Fell Colliery, Jesmond Colliery, and Shiremoor Colliery until at least the 1750s.Another likely son of the first Michael named William Humble continued to reside at Ryton. Was Uriah perhaps a brother or cousin to these Humbles of Ryton?
Uriah Humble married on 17 Jun 1735 to Charity Kuster at the First Presbyterian Church at Philadelphia.Uriah Humble Junr and Martin Humble were naturalized on 25 Sep 1740 in Bucks Co, Pennsylvania, and in 1742 Uriah appeared on a list of residents of Nockamixon, Bucks county (near the Durham Iron Works).Michael Humble, son of Uriah Humble and Charity Kuster, eventually settled in Mercer County, Kentucky, where he died say 1818.
William Humble of Ryton, Durham, likely son of Michael Humble of Ryton, married on 15 Nov 1729 at the Church of the Holy Cross, Ryton to June Jolly. Some of their known children:(1) Michael Humble [christened 28 Feb 1738 Woodside Presbyterian Chapel, Ryton], (2) Cuthbert Humble [christened 14 Sep 1742 Woodside Presbyterian Chapel, Ryton; married Catherine Errington 30 Dec 1769 Church of the Holy Cross, Ryton], and (3) William Humble (christened 12 Feb 1745 Woodside Presbyterian Chapel, Ryton).
Michael Humble of Birkside (in Gateshead), Durham, another likely son of Michael Humble of Ryton by his wife Isabell Best (daughter of William Best and Jane Stockton), married on 7 Apr 1739 at the Church of St Oswald, Durham, to Ann Saunders, perhaps the Ann Sanders (daughter of Robert Sanders of Ryton and his wife Margaret Longcaster) who was christened at the Church of the Holy Cross, Ryton on 22 May 1716.Michael had a son named Robert christened on 20 Apr 1753 at the Ryton Woodside Presbyetrian Chapel. Was this son Robert perhaps one and the same with Robert Humble (1753-1840) of Clear Creek, Woodford Co, Kentucky?Although a full generation later, the Robert Humble of Woodford County followed a very similar migratory pattern as the family of Uriah Humble [born in England, immigrated to Philadelphia, removed to Virginia, then finally settling in Kentucky].
I would appreciate any additional observations on these various individuals.
