I grew up with the EXACT same story within my family. I'm related to William Fadden Ritchie. I'm now on to researching my moms side of the family and there was a genealogy package put together by a Lyndsay K Ritchie in 1949. The strange thing is I moved to Peterborough in 1992, none of my family had ever seen it but it so happened that a distant relative was living a few streets over and had a copy. It starts with the "legend" on page 1. About 10 years ago I emailed someone off another genealogy site regarding it and she said it was nonsense. So who knows :) If you want a copy off the original package I would be happy to scan it and email it or you may already have it.

Kind regards,

Chris Williams
