In Reply to: John Hume b. 1732 Culpeper Co. VA 3rd son of George by Jules Delambre of 1020

Dear Jules,
Hello! I am most interested in your research on John Hume of Culpepper County, VA. He was the son of George Hume, immigrant surveyor and tax collector for Orange County, VA. John Hume came from Culpepper County, VA to Fayette County, KY very early on. He died in 1802 in Campbell County, Ky.
My Great Grandmother was Isabel Hume Beck of Sullivan County, Indiana. She died at the age of 95y. She had lived with us until she died when I was 12 years old. In her possession was a book entitled The Hume Family by Dr. John Robert Hume. This is the first published book of the Hume Family from Va published in 1903. Times were very different in that time and Dr. Hume got his facts somewhat mixed up. Isabel's father was the uncle of Dr. John Robert Hume. I am so surprised that the info on John Hume going to Maine is still floating out there. This info in Dr. John Robert Hume's book has been found incorrect for many years now.
I have been researching this family for many years with many other great HUME researchers. Please see copies of The National Genealogical Siciety Quarterly Magazine of the National Genealogical Society, Washington D.C. in issues Jul & Dec 1969, Articles Tiger By The Tail Part One & Two, By McCurdy Also see John Hume of Culpepper County, VA by McCurdy in same Quarterly in 1970. I don't remember which monthly issue. I have this info in my files but I have just moved and have not unpacked any genealogy as yet. I am working my way to it.
My info is on the website freepages with rootsweb and was put on by James R. Hume, a desc of George Hume, surveyor for me as I supplied him with my line info. Check this out and email me at rootsdigger40@sbcglobal.net.
The website is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~humefamily/2/29025/htm
As for the John Hume of Jefferson County, Ky, I have been in touch with a descendent of this John Hume and his family came from PA for that John Hume. Totally different line of Hume. George Hume the surveyor was born in 1698 in Wedderburn Castle, Berwick County, Scotland near Duns. You can Google Wedderburn Castle and it will lead you to James R. Hume's homepage too. He has great info on his site including many pictures. There are some family pictures on my site too.
I have been researching this Hume line of mine since 1968. One thing that has helped us in our quest for info on John Hume of Culpepper County, Va was the name Elzephan Hume who was a son of John's. He also was in Tax Lists with John etc. there in Culpepper County, Va and then in Ky. I have quite a bit of info on Elzephan even though he died rather young. My great grandmother's older brother was name Weeden Elzephan Sleete Hume. My 3rd great grandfather Lewis Hume had a son by his 1st marriage to Sally Sleete. He was Elzephan Weeden Sleete Hume. Sarah Sally Sleete Hume died after giving birth to her son and Lewis remarried to my 3rd g g mother Mary "Polly" Roberts. Lewis & Sally's son was the founder of Hume, Edgar County, Illinois. Elzephan was listed in John Hume's will of Campbell County, Ky in 1802. The name Elzephan keeps cropping up with the descendants Of John Hume of Culpepper County, VA. Check published Tax Records for Culpepper County, Va for Hume. John's son Elzephan died in Boone County, Ky in 1830's and his will is there. You will find George son of surveyor George, George son of John, John & Elzephan in the tax lists until they came to Ky in 1780's. Here is my line:
I am Ruth Avis Flack McKnight. I am the daughter of Marion Stanley "Bill" Flack and Ruth Evelyn Rembe.
Marion Stanley "Bill" Flack the son of William Henry Flack and Elva May Beck.
Elva May Beck the dau of John Asbury Beck and Isabel Hume.
Isabel Hume the daughter of John Hume and Frances Byland.
John Hume the son of Lewis Hume and 2nd w/Mary "Polly" Roberts
Lewis Hume the son of Rev. George Hume and 1st wife Elizabeth Proctor.
Rev. George Hume son of John Hume and prob. Elizabeth Banks.
John Hume the son of George Hume, immigrant surveyor born 1698 in Wedderburn Castle, Scotland.
I will help all that I am able.
Please feel free to contact me by above email address or at 4930 Red Robin Drive, Apt C, Beech Grove IN 46107-2588. Phone 317-788-1121. Good luck, Ruth Flack McKnight
