Hello Lyn,
Thanks for posting your reply to my message.
Are you working from found records or do you have some family history passed down through your line?
On the Scotlands People website I have seen a birth for Richard Hume, natural son of James, at Lasswade in 1812 - no mention of a mother's name. I am assuming that this is the record for our Richard Hume. But do you know when he came to Tasmania? and on what ship? Census records for 1842 and 1843 locate him at Avoca in a home owned by Dr Cameron, presumably working as a farmer. I know a little about Dr Cameron through research. Also the 1848 census locates him at Fingal in a dwelling owned by Daniel Webb. Do you any other details about his time there. I have records of Richard as licensee of the St Andrews Inn at Cleveland (which I stayed at during my October visit to Tasmania)from 1848-1851. There is a record for an application for 2000 acres at Cleveland. Did he take this up or move at this time to the Cressy, Carrick, Longford area to farm. I have located succeeding Humes to this area including my great grandfather Henry James Hume who came to Victoria in the 1870s. I visited the Carrick cemetery where Henry James' brother Albert and his wife Dinah are buried. Do you come from this line?
I can't help feeling there is some earlier connection with NSW as Henry James's sons had properties there and Henry James actually died at Adelthan although is buried at his home town of Gowangardie.
I would love to locate portraits or photographs of Humes from Richard down. I have a photo of Henry James.
Also I am exploring the connection with the Gibson and Whitchurch families.
Lastly abouth Richard and Harriet's children: where will I find the record of the birth of Henry John Hume (father of Henry James)and is Richard Hume his father or is he Harriet Manners son by another man, if Henry John was born before Richard and Harriet married in 1830. I haven't located any record yet for the third son George Abel.
Regards from Helen Fry
